Responsibility. It's often synonymous with the word sustainability in this global village of heightened awareness of the impact we make to our environment with the choices we make everyday. It should stand for more than just a catch-word marketers like to use to "green-wash" their products and consumers. It's about our survival.

So how do we apply this in our line of business? What small things could we be doing differently to minimise our carbon footprint, better ourselves, and feel good about doing it? These are the questions we ask ourselves and this often leads to digitising, simplifying, streamlining, and doing away with redundancies in our operation. It's good business practice.

One problem we had tackled head-on was an obvious one: plastic dental bags. These are the bags used to carry impressions, models, bites, trays, and dentures. They're ubiquitous and are used only once before they're chucked into the waste bin. We've done away with the old and replaced them with EPI Oxo-Biodegradable bags which are designed to disintergrate under sunlight as they return to earth.

But we can do more. Emerging technologies like chairside intraoral scanners coming onto the market will not only eliminate the need for bags all together, but also reduce the number of trips dispatched to pick up impressions, reducing the amount of CO₂ released into the atmosphere. Expect us to adopt and stay on the curve of the latest technological advances in dentistry as they are made available.
